President Nguyen Minh Triet has signed decisions granting Vietnamese citizenship to two out of twelve foreign footballers who applied for it last year.
Striker Le Tostao from Zimbabwe and and Brazilian-born midfielder Nguyen Hoang Helio play for V-League clubs Thanh Hoa and Nghe An respectively.
They can now be used as local players are expected to strengthen Thanh Hoa's front line and Nghe An's defense.
Including Tostao and Helio, Vietnam has so far granted Vietnamese citizenship for a total 11 foreign players, including Brazilian-born Phan Van Santos of Dong Tam Long An, and Hoang Anh Gia Lai's Doan Van Nirut and Doan Van Sakda, both of Thai origin.
The government is still considering the remaining ten applicants, including Thai midfielder Issawa Singthong and Congo striker Tshamala Kahanga of Dong Tam Long An.
The granting of Vietnamese citizenship to footballer makes it possible for the concerned clubs to have more foreign players (a total three) on the field at any given time.
Some poorer clubs are complaining that the rules are unfair.
