TV rights for the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup will cost around US$1.4 million, an amount Vietnamese broadcast agencies are unlikely to shell out.
Japanese sports marketing company Dentsu Alpha has obtained the rights to the event from the World Sport Group, and wants $4.2 million for the 2012, 2014, and 2016 events.
Vietnam Television (VTV) paid only $300,000 for the tournament in 2010.
Vietnamese TV stations have not commented on the steep increase in the rate, but since Dentsu Alpha is a strategic partner of VTV, there is hope they can strike some agreement.
If they cannot, it appears that Vietnamese fans cannot watch the event live.
