Vietnam's badminton ace Nguyen Tien Minh, ranked 10th in the world, lost 1-2 to world No.3 Chen Long of China in the second round of the All England Badminton Championships Friday.
Minh, 29, had beaten the 23-year-old Chen at the Thomas & Ulber Cup last month but failed to repeat the victory.
After Minh took the first set 21-19, Chen stepped up his efforts and took the next two 21-9, 21-16 to progress to the third round.
Joining Minh in a surprise loss was sixth seeded Japanese Sho Sasaki, who lost to young Indonesian player Haydom Rambaka 17-21, 17-21 in another second round match.
However, the biggest surprise of the tournament was the loss of world No.4, Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark, who lost to the host's Rajiv Ouseph in the first round.
Other top players including world No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, world No.2 Lin Dan of China and the 8th-ranked Kenichi Tago of Japan have all advanced to the third round.
