Vietnam's top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh beat Indonesian rival
Tommy Sugiarto in straight sets in the first round of the US$200,000 Yonex French Open on Wednesday.
The 7th-ranked Minh had beaten the 18th-ranked Sugiarto in all their three encounters earlier, but Sugiarto started well and was leading the first set most of the time.
Just as it seemed that Sugiarto would win the first set, Minh stepped up his game to win 22-20.
Indonesia's Number two got off to a good start in the second set as well, but was no match for Minh as the latter won 21-14 to end the match after 37 minutes.
In the second round, Minh will clash with 25th-ranked South Korean Shon Wan Ho. Minh has defeated Ho three times in as many matches.
If Minh beats Ho, he is likely to face world number one, Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, in the third round. The contest ends Sunday.
