Vietnamese badminton ace Nguyen Tien Minh has booked a quarterfinal berth in the YONEX Open Japan after beating Malaysian Daren Liew 2-1 in the second round in Tokyo Thursday.
The 14th-ranked Minh, who beat Frenchman Brice Leverdez in straight sets in the first round, had an easy time in the first set and beat Liew 21-14. But the 27th-ranked Malaysian raised his game to take the second 23-21.
But it seemed to leave him drained, enabling the Vietnamese to win 21-16.
Minh takes on 21st-ranked Yun Hu of Hong Kong, who beat Japan's Takuma Ueda 21-12, 21-10 in the second round after upsetting 5th-ranked Dane Peter Hoeg Gade in the first round.
A big surprise came in the second round when Japan's world No 7 Sho Sasaki was swept aside by 25th-ranked Thai Boonsak Ponsana.
