Thirteen teenage Vietnamese athletes will participate at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore from August 16-26.

The first edition of the contest is expected to welcome athletes aged 14-17 from 205 countries and territories.

According to pundits, Vietnam's hopes rest mainly on 16-year-old weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan of Ho Chi Minh City.

In December 2009, Tuan won one gold and two silver medals in the 59kg category at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Dubai.

He finished behind Chinese weightlifter Lu Yuntao in the snatch and total lift events but was superior in the clean and jerk event.

Earlier, Tuan earned three silver medals in the 50kg category, also behind Yuntao, at the First Youth World Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand in May 2009.

As there is no 50kg category at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, Tuan will compete in the 56kg category.
