Group B hosts Nghe An were held 2-2 at Vinh Stadium by a totally unexpected late rally from Hai Phong in the opening match of the Thanh Nien-sponsored U.21 qualifying round on Sunday.
With a better team and the advantage of home soil, Hai Phong was considered the underdog in this match, and this was proved right as the hosts dominated the game from the beginning, taking the lead before half time and doubling it at about 10 minutes from full time.
The hosts were all set for a 2-0 victory when an own goal by defender Viet Ba reduced their margin.
Then, Hai Phong's Dinh Vu Hai Anh equalized the score and stunned Nghe An fans with a powerful shot during stoppage time.
In other action, underdogs Ha Tinh thrashed People's Police 4-0 while Hoa Phat Hanoi and Viettel fought to a goalless tie.
