Top-tier V-League champs Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) won the super cup after beating the National Cup champs Navibank Saigon 3-1 in a penalty shootout at Vinh Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors, Navibank Saigon from Ho Chi Minh City, looked tired after a 300-plus kilometer bus trip from Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport to Vinh Town. Also, two of their favorites central fullback Long Giang and striker Quang Hai couldn't play due to injuries.

SLNA took control of the match from the beginning and had more scoring chances but they didn't score the opener until after the break.

However, the visitors scored the equalizer just 10 minutes later and the 90 official minutes of the match ended in a tie.

The winners had to be decided in a penalty shootout and the hosts were the winners after the visitors' Duoc Em, Viet Cuong and Quang Long failed to score from the spot.

It was SLNA's fourth super cup title in the 11 seasons after Vietnamese football turned professional in 2000. SLNA had won the trophy for three consecutive years in 2000, 2001 and 2002 but had to wait for nine years before winning the trophy again this year.

Navibank Saigon missed the chance of lifting the trophy for the first time.
