Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) took the top place after a 6-1 home win over Quang Nam in the second round of the V-League 2014 on Sunday.
SLNA was not considered a strong team after several of its best players moved to other clubs before the beginning of the new season.
However, SLNA, one of the best football training centers in the country, has proved it is still a contender for the title this year.
The hosts finished the first half leading three to nil and needed only 24 more minutes of the second half to score another three goals.
After having scored six goals, the hosts played more slowly, giving some opportunities to the visitors and they took the chance to pull one back.
The hosts’ best striker Le Cong Vinh, also the country’s top goal-scorer, scored the sixth goal for the hosts, his 99th in the country’s top flight league.
It should have been his 100th goal in the league but his goal against Xuan Thanh Saigon in the 2013 season was not counted because the Ho Chi Minh City-based club withdrew from the league after complaining that league organizers were unfair to the club.
Cong Vinh also sent the ball to the back of Quang Nam’s net in the first half of the Sunday match, but the referee ruled that Vinh had been offside. However, VTV replays showed that Vinh was not offside when he scored the goal.
In the other Sunday game, hosts An Giang were held to a scoreless draw by visitors Dong Nai although the visitors played with only 10 men from 49 minutes after Duc Thang was sent off with a red card for an illegal tackle.
On Saturday, Thanh Hoa beat visitors Da Nang 1-0 while Dong Tam Long An came back from two goals behind to take a home draw against Hai Phong.
On Friday, the league's reigning champs Hanoi T&T took a 4-1 win over Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Quang Ninh beat hosts Ninh Binh 3-1.
Champs Hanoi T&T have also taken two wins like SLNA but are in second place due to goal difference.
