Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) maintained its first place position in Vietnam's top-flight V-League after taking a 3-1 away win over Dong Tam Long An (DTLA) in the 6th round of play on April 21.
SLNA is playing even better than they did when they won the league championship two years ago.
Both the club's foreign and domestic players are excellent, but what is most special about the side is that Coach Nguyen Huu Thang has continued to trust its young players, who won the country's Under-21 championship last year.
The club's fans have not only filled its home stadium in Vinh Town, but have followed their team on the road. SLNA fans could be seen at all the corners of Long An Stadium on Sunday, where SLNA overcame the absence of striker Cong Vinh who missed the match due food poisoning.
SLNA took control of the match from the outset, with Ngoc Hai putting the visitors in front midway through the first half. Trinidadian midfielder Hughton Hector doubled the scored in the 81st minute.
Striker Viet Thang scored for DTLA three minutes later, but Trong Hoang answered in the final minute to put the game out of reach.
SLNA now leads the league with 16 points, while 2005-06 champs DTLA are way down in the list with just four points.
In other action, Thanh Hoa drew 2-2 with Hai Phong. Thanh Hoa, with 9 points, is now in seventh place of the 12-team league while Hai Phong is in third with 10 points.
An away draw with Ninh Binh on Saturday did not help Binh Duong much. The 2007-08 champions are now just above last-place side Kien Giang, yet they have looked better since coach Le Thuy Hai rejoined the team earlier this month after the club fired Cho Yoon Hwan after starting the season with five consecutive losses.
However, Hai only works as the technical manager of the club rather than as its head coach because he does not hold the coaching certificate required by the Vietnam Football Federation.
