Vietnam's Ly Hoang Nam, 15, beat American Daniel Kerznerman in the first round of The International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grade 1 Tennis Tournament in San José, Costa Rica on Tuesday.
The Copa Del Café of ITF Grade 1 attracts many of the top young tennis prospects from around the world.
Ranked 276th in the ITF's junior rankings, Nam entered the tournament unseeded in the boys' singles division, but managed to defeat the 7th-seeded Kerznerman, ranked 113th overall.
Nam upset his US counterpart 6-2, 6-1 to cruise into the second round. The first round win also earned Nam 20 points in the ITF rankings.
Nam had a successful year in 2012, becoming the youngest player ever to win Vietnam's tennis championship after beating the older Do Minh Quan in the tourney's final match.
His club, Becamex Binh Duong, has been providing him with significant funds that have allowed him to compete at international events to gain experience, earn points and improve his world ranking.
