The Under-21 South East Asian Football Championship will be organized from February 25 till March 5, 2012 in Brunei, a meeting in Laos decided Monday, October 17.
The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) officials agreed at the meeting that the tournament in Brunei will be called Hassanal Bolkiah.
The tournament, first organized in 2005, was expected to take place every two years but it was postponed because Brunei was banned by FIFA from international football events from September 2009 till May 2011 for government interference in football activities.
The revived contest provides an opportunity for countries in the region to prepare their football teams for the U21 Asian Football Championships in July 2012.
All the 11 teams in Southeast Asia are expected to compete at the National Stadium in Brunei.
Vietnam Football Federation General Secretary Tran Quoc Tuan said the Vietnamese U21 team for the Brunei tournament will have key players selected from the squad that won the Thanh Nien-sponsored U21 International Football Championship early this month.
In addition, AFF officials have also decided to organize the U16 AFF Championship 2012 from September 21 till October 6, the U19 AFF event 2012 from November 2-17 in Laos, the Futsal AFF 2012 event in Bangkok and the women's AFF contest in Vietnam in July 2012.
