Hoang Quy Phuoc has won the gold medal in the men's 100m freestyle at the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, becoming the first ever Vietnamese to win two swimming golds in the biennial event.
At the Jakabaring Sports Complex Wednesday the 18-year-old covered the distance in 50.79 seconds, ahead of Singapore's Yeo Kai Quan who clocked 50.98 seconds and Indonesian Fauzi Triady who came third in 51.36 seconds.
It was a splendid win for Phuoc who had trailed Malaysia's Jian Beng Foo in the first 50 meters before pulling away from the field.
On Sunday Phuoc had won the 100m butterfly.
Speaking to Thanh Nien after the win, Phuoc said: "When I made the turn, I glanced at the Malaysian and saw he was a short distance ahead of me. I tried harder."
