Hoang Quy Phuoc has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics after clocking 53.56 seconds to win the gold medal in the men's 100m butterfly event at the Malaysia Open on Sunday, May 15.
Phuoc finished the race almost 100m ahead of India's Virdhawal Khade and Hong Kong's Ng Chun Nam.
The 18-year-old swimmer has also qualified for the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai in July.
The B standard for the 2012 London Olympics and the Shanghai world championship is 54.19 seconds and 54.16 seconds respectively.
Phuoc also took a bronze medal in the men's 25 meter breaststroke, clocking 25.67 seconds at the May 12-15 Malaysia Open which attracted strong contestants from India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Uzbekistan and hosts Malaysia because they had a chance to qualify for the 2012 Olympics as well as the 2011 world championships.
Vo Thai Nguyen of Vietnam won two gold medals in the men's 400-meter individual medley and 200m butterfly.
In the women's events, 16-year-old Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen won the 200m butterfly gold medal while Nguyen Thi Anh Vien got the silver in the 400m individual medley.
Thai Nguyen and Pham Thanh Nguyen have also qualified for the World Swimming Championships in Shanghai in July 2011.
