Vietnam's chess ace Le Quang Liem has climbed back into the world's super Grandmaster group, according to the latest World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings released Tuesday.

Liem has jumped from 47th with an elo ranking of 2,698 to the 43rd spot with an elo of 2,703, thanks to his second place finish at the HD Bank Chess Tournament in Ho Chi Minh City in March.

However, the country's No. 2 player, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, fell from the 87th place (elo 2,662) to 100th (elo 2,656).

Vietnam's best female chess player Pham Le Thao Nguyen is currently in the 69th position in the world's women's rankings while Hoang Thi Bao Tram is in 108th place.

The nation's top players have been preparing hard for the Asian Chess Championships to be held in Ho Chi Minh City May 4-14.

The top five male players and the women's champion at this event will qualify for the World Chess Championships.

Liem and Son will be the top and second seeds in the men's category but it will not be an easy championship fight for them with strong rivals in the fray, like Ding Liren, Ni Hua and Yu Yangyi from China and Filipino prodigy So Wesley.

In the women's category, Bao Tram and Thao Nguyen are seeded 8th and 12th respectively.
