Pham Le Thao Nguyen claimed the champion title at the 6th HD Bank Cup International Chess Open 2016 that took place from March 8-13 in Ho Chi Minh City.
The 29-year-old woman from Can Tho, who has highest Elo rating of 2,335 among local female chess players, has five points after nine games.
Singapore’s Gong Quanyun finished second and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Thanh An finished third in female category.
In male category, local chess ace and defending champion Le Quang Liem did not register for the tournament, citing health reasons.
China’s Wang Hao emerged as a solo winner in competition of 71 players from 12 countries and territories, after scoring 8 points.
The second place was for Jun Zhao from China who finished half a point behind the winner, while Czech player GM Viktor Laznicka remained third with 7 points.
In Challenger event, local player Le Thanh Tai secured the title with 8 points.
The event, with total prize of US$40,000, was a 9-round Swiss open tournament with an average Elo rating of 2350.
