Vietnam's first drag racing competition will be held in the coastal town of Nha Trang this August.

According to the organizers, Nomura Motors Company Limited, the competition, will be held on Tran Phu Street on the 18th and 19th of August.

The race is simple: Two cars race each other a quarter of a mile (402.22m) to a set finish line.

To choose the right winner, organizers use a top-notch electronic system because the cars run at very high speeds.

Since it is the first time such an event is being held in Vietnam, normal cars will be used for the race, said Tran Nhu Hoai, director of Nomura Motors Company Limited. He said the length of the race track is enough for the cars to reach their highest speed, "but it is still safe."

Organizers said that 40 Vietnamese racers would compete for first and second prizes.

Apart from the first and second prizes, there is also a prize for the competitor most loved by the fans and another prize for the youngest racer. The values of the prizes will depend on the sponsorship and proceeds of the event.

To ensure safety, the competitors will have to undergo health examinations. The CP Big End Company from Japan and the Japan Drag Race Driver Association will provide technical assistance.

Le Xuan Than, vice chairman of the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa Province, said that provincial authorities will create favorable conditions for the success of the event. Fire trucks, ambulances and security forces will be provided to ensure safety, he said.
