Nghe An won the 2010 National Cup trophy after beating Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) in a match under a heavy rain at HCMC's Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday.
Nghe An didn't have the service of their best Croatian striker Vidovic due to injury, but the team proved lucky.
Nigerian striker Abdulrazak M. Ekpoki enjoyed a nice header off a corner kick to help Nghe An take the lead midway through the first half.
After the opener, Nghe An had another advantage when rain began to pour, flooding the field.
HAGL, who hail from the Central Highlands slogged through the rain. Under the unfamiliar weather conditions, Coach Kiatisuk Senamuang's players faltered
As the game drew to an end, HAGL played hard but failed to capitalize on the few opportunities.
Kiatisuk said after the match, "We prepared very well for this game but unexpectedly the weather spoiled everything."
HAGL team manager Nguyen Tan Anh said, "We expected a win and the players did their best; but HAGL couldn't play well under the heavy rain. I congratulate Nghe An anyway. They had reasonable strategies and adapted to the situation better than us."
