Vietnam's number one tennis player Do Minh Quan won his sixth consecutive men's singles national championship after beating Quang Huy in the final in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday.

Huy was not in his best form for the final match against the nation's best player. Huy led 3-0 in the first set but then Quan came back and took the set 6-4.

Huy tried harder in the second set but at one point Quan led 4-2; yet Huy's renewed efforts earned him a 6-4 win to equalize the score.

However, his great efforts in the second set were too tiring and he had to retire while Quan was leading 1-0 in the decider.

It was Quan's ninth national championship and it proved that Vietnam still hasn't found new talents in the sport, even though there are some excellent young players like Hoai Nam and Hoang Thien.

Despite the loss in the men's singles, Quang Huy paired with Quoc Khanh of Tanimex team and took the men's doubles title with a 2-1 win over Huynh Chi Khuong and Tran Thanh Hoang of the Military team.

In the women's singles, Huynh Phuong Dai Trang from Da Nang City successfully retained her title after beating Tran Lam Anh of Tanimex in straight sets in the final match.

However, the pair Dai Trang and Phan Thi Thanh Binh of Da Nang lost 3-6, 7-5, and 6-7 to the Tanimex duo Huynh Mai Huynh and Tran Thi Tam Hao in the women's doubles final.

With four championships out of five categories, the Tanimex team of Ho Chi Minh City finished top at the 2011 national tennis championships while Da Nang came in second and the Military team third.
