Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh struggled past China's Wang Zhengming 2-1 in the second round of the 2011 Indonesia Super Series Premier on Thursday.
In the first round on Wednesday, Minh, ranked seventh in the world, also had a tough match before prevailing 2-1 over the 13th-ranked Lee Hyun-il from the Republic of Korea.
The Thursday match against world number 17 Chinese player proved even harder for Minh, who won the game after an hour and 10 minutes.
He won the first set 21-9, but Wang Zhengming took the set 27-25. In the decider, Minh fought hard to win 22-20.
The hard-fought win gave the 7th-seeded Minh a quarterfinal match against the top seed and world number one, Lee Chong Wei, of Malaysia.
Minh, the only Vietnamese to enter the world's top 100, has beaten Lee Chong Wei only once and has suffered seven losses in the eight times they have met.
The June 21-26 Indonesia Open Super Series Premier 2011 offers a total cash prize of US$600,000.
