Vietnam's badminton ace Nguyen Tien Minh advanced to the 2011 Yonex Australian Open quarterfinals after beating China'S Li Yu 2-1 in Melbourne on Thursday.
While the 7th-ranked, second-seeded defending champion was expected to beat his 134th-ranked rival, the victory was not as easy as expected.
After Minh led in the first set for a while, Li caught up at 9-9 before going on to take the set 21-16.
Minh lifted his game in the second set to win it 21-16 and went on to dominate the third, prevailing 21-10.
Minh will next clash with the sixth-seed Japanese Sho Sasaki, ranked 26th in the world, on Friday.
Minh is the defending champion at the April 5-10 event but has been seeded second behind Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana, who is ranked sixth, just above Minh in the Badminton World Federation rankings.
