Nguyen Tien Minh cruised into the men's singles quarterfinals of the 2011 Vietnam Open Grand Prix badminton championship in Ho Chi Minh City after beating Japan's Keigo Sonoda on Thursday.

It took the 7th-ranked top seed Vietnamese 40 minutes to defeat the 79th-ranked Japanese competitor 21-12, 21-15.

Minh will next clash with the 57th-ranked Malaysian Daren Liev who he has beaten on two previous occasions.

In other action, Vietnam's last female representative Vu Thi Trang bowed out in the third round in a straight sets loss to Japan's Ayumi Mine.

Though Trang is ranked 143rd and Ayumi is ranked 263rd in the world, Trang looked the weaker player.
