Hanoi ACB left-winger Pham Thanh Luong has won the 2009 Golden Ball award, organizers announced Friday.
Although Vietnam's Under-23 football players were runners-up at the 25th South East Asian Games in Laos, the 23-year-old captain of the squad, played a key role in their performance.
Luong, who won the Best Young Player award in 2008 after contributing to Vietnam's victory at the ASEAN Football Federation Cup championship, is also an important player in the national team.
Nguyen Trong Hoang¸21-year-old midfielder of V-League club Song Lam Nghe An, won the Best Young Player award.
He is also making huge contributions to his club, which is leading the second-tier First Division league and is very likely to be promoted to the top-tier V-League next season.
As such, his selection for the award did not surprise many.
Some newspapers had said Luong would be the golden ball winner even before the result was announced by the Saigon Giai Phong newspaper, which gives the award.
Luong won the title with 301 points, followed by Silver Ball winner midfielder Nguyen Vu Phong of V-League runners-up Binh Duong with 245 points and Bronze Ball winner, goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong of V-League club Dong Thap with 197 points

The organizers sent 138 voting cards to football reporters and experts and collected 136 valid ones. Voters gave three, two and one points to the players to choose as gold, silver and bronze ball winners.
Nguyen Trong Hoang¸21-year-old midfielder of V-League club Song Lam Nghe An, won the Best Young Player award while the Best Foreign Player title went to Argentine striker Gaston Merlo who scored 15 goals in the 2009 V-League season to help Da Nang take the league title.

The Silver and Bronze Ball winners were goalkeeper Kieu Trinh with 215 points and Dao Thi Mien with 108 points.
The trio made great contributions to helping Vietnam win the Women's Football Championship at the 25th SEA Games in Vientiane in December 2009.
It was the fourth time Kim Chi has won the title. She had previously won it in 2004, 2005 and 2007.
The presentation ceremony for the awards will be held at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on May 18.
