Local players shine at int'l tennis tourney opener

Five out of six Vietnamese players took wins over rivals from Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia in the first round of the Tanimex Cup 2010 in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.

Youngster Ho Vu Hoan from Hanoi had been counted out by pundits before upsetting Laos' number one Donedy 7-6 7-6.

Senior Tran Duc Quynh, 36 years old, beat Malaysian 16-year-old Mohd Assri Merzuki 2-1.

Quynh lost 5-7 in the first set but came back strongly to beat the teenager 6-1 6-2 in the next two sets.

In other action, Le Quoc Khanh beat Vitaya Lasavady from Laos while Ngo Duc Duong and Tran Thanh Hoang defeated Cambodian players Sambath Orn and Chamroeun Ek respectively.

The only Vietnamese player that suffered a loss in the first round on Wednesday was Pham Huu Vinh, who was defeated by Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam from Malaysia.

The National Men's Tennis Championships Open 2010 at the Tanimex Culture & Sports Tennis Club in HCMC's Tan Binh Industrial Park will offer a total cash prize of US$30,000.

The men's singles champion will be awarded the trophy and a cash prize of $2,500, apart from cash prizes for wins in each round.
