One of the nation's top weightlifters, Hoang Anh Tuan, was on Friday removed from the list of Vietnamese athletes set to compete at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China from November 12-27.
Le Quy Phuong, manager of the Vietnamese delegation to China, said the World Weightlifting Federation suspects that Anh Tuan used stimulants at the 2010 World Weightlifting Championships in Turkey in September. Tuan didn't win a medal then.
According to the weightlifting division of Vietnam's Physical Training and Sports Department, Tuan was tested after the event in Turkey and the World Weightlifting Federation said Tuan is suspected to have used stimulants.
Removing Tuan from the list of Vietnamese competitors to China will affect Vietnam's goal of winning 4-6 gold medals this year.
Tuan won the silver medal in the men's 56kg category at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar in 2006 and also won silver in the same category at the Olympic Games in China in 2008.
