Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem remains on track to retain the Aeroflot Open chess championship after his first loss in his penultimate match to Bulgarian Cheparinov Ivan in Moscow on Tuesday.

Despite the defeat, the reigning champion, ranked 79th (elo 2664), still leads Group A with six points after five wins, two ties and a loss. He can successfully defend his title if he beats Azerbaijani player Mamedov Rauf, ranked 86th (elo 2660) in his last match.

Liem's loss to the ranked 77th Bulgarian Ivan (elo 2665) has made left the contest more open. Ivan has the same six points as Liem, and right behind them are eight other players with 5.5 points.
