A victory over Slovenian Anna Muzychuk in the penultimate round of the 2012 Gibraltar Chess Festival Wednesday placed Vietnam's Le Quang Liem back in a leading group.
The 29th-ranked Vietnamese Grandmaster, seeded fifth in the Masters category of the event, beat the 32nd seeded Slovenian after 30 moves and jumped 10 places to the 7th position with 6.5 points.
Liem is now in the third leading group of nine players with 6.5 points each, which includes top seed Russian Peter Svidler, ranked 13th in the world, currently in 11th spot, and fourth seed Hungarian Zoltan Almasi in eighth position.
Continued impressive performances have kept the female world champion, 25th-seeded Chinese Hou Yifan, on top of the table with 7.5 points after she beat Latvian player Alexei Shirov in 53 moves on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old Chinese girl is followed by a group of five players with seven points each, including second seed Azerbaijani Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in third spot and third seed Englishman Michael Adams in second place.
In the final round, Hou Yifan will clash with Mamedyarov while Adams will take on 14th seed Moldovan Viktor Bologan, who is now in sixth position with seven points.
The 20-year-old Vietnamese GM will compete with 22nd seeded 18-year-old Indian Parimarjan Negi, who is currently in 12th position with 6.5 points.
The 10th edition of the annual Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, held from January 24 till February 2, has attracted 256 players from 60 countries around the world.
