Le Quang Liem won the rapid chess contest Tuesday at the 2013 National Rapid-Blitz Chess Championships taking place in Ho Chi Minh City from April 17 till May 3.
Ranked 29th in the world, Vietnam's best chess player took nine wins and two draws to finish the rapid chess contest with 10 points, ahead of second place Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, the country's No. 2 player, who finished with 8.5 points.
Nguyen Duc Hoa took an early lead in the contest, but faltered to finish in third place after losing to Liem and Son.
In the women's rapid chess event, Nguyen Bich Ngoc beat out bigger names to take the title with 10 points.
The country's best female player Pham Le Thao Nguyen lost to Ngoc in the final round and fell to third while Hoang Thi Bao Tram finished in second place. Tram had the same nine points as Thao Nguyen but had better tiebreak points.
The event's participants will now compete in the "blitz" chess contest, set to conclude May 3.
