Vietnam's No.1 and No.2 chess players, Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, entered the second round of the Chess World Cup in Norway on Monday.
After their wins from the first games, Quang Liem and Truong Son needed only a draw to advance to the second round. But the 42nd-ranked Quang Liem, elo 2702, beat the Filipino Oliver Barbosa, elo 2571, after 32 moves.
It was harder for Truong Son, elo 2625, who played 60th-ranked Armenian player Vladimir Akopian, elo 2691. But Son managed to fight to a tie with Akopian after 40 moves.
In the second round, Quang Liem will clash with Spaniard Francisco Pons Vallejo, elo 2706, standing 41st in the World Chess Federation (FIDE)'s rankings.
Meanwhile, Truong Son will fight against the winner of a duel between the 29th-ranked Russian Dmitry Andreikin and Darimi Pouria from Iran.
