Top seed Le Quang Liem, Vietnam's No.1 chess player, drew with Chinese grandmaster Ni Hua in their sixth game at the HD Bank Open in Ho Chi Minh City Monday.
The tie meant that Liem, ranked 47th globally, missed his chance to take the top position at the tournament from his Chinese rival.
The 20-year-old grandmaster Liem will next clash with Filipino Gomez John Paul while Ni Hua will face Duong The Anh of Vietnam in the seventh round.
Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Vietnam's No.2, seeded second at the March 1-8 event, is not in good form and has fallen to the 14th position after a draw in round 6.
Son's girlfriend Pham Le Thao Nguyen also drew in round six but she continues to to lead the 20 females out of 90 players at the tournament.
