Vietnam's No.1 chess player Le Quang Liem earned a win over Argentine GM Ruben Felgaer in the fourth round of the 2012 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival on Friday.

Ruben, 30, Elo 2571, a two-time winner of the Pan-American junior championships (2000, 2001), took the first three rounds while Liem, 20, ranked 29th with Elo 2714, registered two wins and a draw.

It was expected to be a fierce match, and in fact it was not very easy for the fifth-seeded Liem, who needed 54 moves to defeat Ruben to be in fourth place with 3.5 points.

Top-seeded Russian GM Peter Svidler, ranked 13th in the world, Elo 2749, grabbed a win over Englishman IM Hunt Adam C, 2462, in the fourth round to put himself in 17th place with three points now.

Female Chinese GM Hou Yifan, Elo 2605, drew with third-seeded Englishman GM Michael Adams, Elo 2724, to lead the tournament with 3.5 points, ahead of second-place Adams also with 3.5 points.

Englishman GM Short Nigel D, Elo 2677, is now in the third spot with 3.5 points after a fourth round draw with Italian GM Brunello Sabino, Elo 2581.

The 20-year-old Vietnamese GM Liem will next clash with the 48-year-old Nigel, who earned the highest elo of 2712 in April 2004 and looks to be in his great form at this competition.

The 10th edition of the annual Gibraltar Open, which began January 24, has attracted 256 players from 60 countries around the world. The tournament will finish on February 2.
