Vietnam’s top player Le Quang Liem became the new champion of the HD Bank Cup International Open Chess Tournament in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday, after winning a total of 7.4 points in nine games.
Before the final round, the race for the championship of the open category for both men and women was tough as Liem shared 6.5 points with China’s Li Chao and Singapore’s Zhang Zhong, while the No. 2 seed Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son was closely behind with 6.0 points.
In the ninth game, Liem defeated India’s Padmini Rout, one of the leading female players at the tournament.
Chao lost to Gomez John Paul of the Philippines to rank third, while Zhong ranked second after a draw with Son, who ended up fourth.
In the women's event, Le Kieu Thien Kim claimed the championship with 6.0 points after defeating many strong players.
The 5th HD Bank Cup attracted 78 players from 12 countries and territories competing for prizes worth US$35,000, including $12,000 for the winner.
