Vietnam's judo athlete Van Ngoc Tu lost 2-0 to Brazilian rival Sarah Menezes in their first match of the women's 48kg category at the London Olympics on Saturday.

Ngoc Tu's loss was not a surprise because she is ranked 59th in the world while Sarah Menezes is the world No.3 with a lot of medals and a lot more experience at international events.

Tu put up a good fight, but the Brazilian was too strong for her.

Male shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh was the next Vietnamese athlete to leave the Olympics after scoring 582 points. Eight shooters advanced to the next round, with South Korean shooter Jin Jongoh on top with 588 points. Vinh finished one point less than the eighth-placed athlete.

Female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien finished heat 1 of the women's 400-meter individual medley clocking 4 minutes 50.32 seconds.

It was not enough for her to advance to the second round but the 16-year-old girl received a lot of praise for her impressive performance.

Vien will compete in the women's 200m individual backstroke on Thursday, August 2.
