Japan's captain Genta celebrates his goal at the AFF U19 Cup final against Vietnam on Saturday.
Vietnam U19 team had a narrow 0-1 lost to Japan at the final match of the ASEAN Football Federation’s Nutifood U19 Cup 2014 in Hanoi on Saturday, their third straight loss at a final match since last year.
Vietnam had a good start to pressure Japan in the first half with an audience of more than 40,000 spectators at My Dinh Stadium, including Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
However, Japan successfully blocked all attack efforts by Vietnamese players and no goal was scored in the first half.
In the second half, Japan’s captain Genta scored a goal at 75th minute from a narrow corner.
Japan continued to maintain good defense and sharp attacks during the remaining of the second half but no more goal was scored until the last whistle blown.
Vietnam had lost 3-2 to Japan at the qualifying round.
Earlier on the same day, Thailand defeated Myanmar 1-0 at the third-place playoff.
The loss to Japan put Vietnam at the second place of a regional championship for the third time.
At last year’s AFF U19 Cup’s final, Vietnam lost 7-6 to host Indonesia in penalty shootout. Last month, Vietnam lost 4-3 to Myanmar at the 2014 Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy in Brunei.
