Sports marketing company Strata said two months ago that it would bring Italian club AS Roma to Vietnam for a friendly match in June, but the Italian club has since refused to do so.
The Italian club said it would compete at a traditional contest in Italy and wanted to delay the trip to Hanoi until after the planned date of June 5. However, Strata will then be busy and cannot arrange the event.
Also, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) said bringing the club here at any other time would create a scheduling conflict.
"The friendly match with AS Roma is not in VFF's 2013 plan," VFF General Secretary Ngo Le Bang said on Friday.
"We were happy when Strata manager Mae Mua informed us about her plan to collaborate [with VFF] to organize the friendly match, but now the Italian can't come as expected. It is a pity that Vietnamese fans will miss the chance to see famous players like Francesco Totti.
"However, Vietnamese fans will see friendly matches between Vietnamese Under-23 players and Guingamp Club from France's second-flight Division on May 30 and J-League club Kashima Antlers on June 4 at Hanoi's Hang Day Stadium."
Vietnamese fans may worry that the famous English Premier club Arsenal will also cancel its friendly in Vietnam, but VFF Vice Chairman Le Hung Dung and Doan Nguyen Duc, Chairman of Hoang Anh Gia Lai, a partner of the English club, said that they were sure they could bring the English club to Vietnam for a friendly match this summer.
