Hong Kong football coach Kim Pan-gon said he hopes his team will beat Vietnam at home on March 22 in Group E of the 2015 Asian Football Confederation Cup qualifier.

Pan-gon said, "We could go for the draw against Vietnam, which is a stronger team than we are, but why not try to get three points to go top of the group.

"Vietnam has a higher ranking [134 to 168] and their league is more competitive. They put in a good performance here in an international friendly last year which they won 2-1, but I always believe in my players and am sure they can do better this time."

In response to Pan-gon's statement, Vietnam's interim coach Hoang Van Phuc said, "I know Hong Kong is not easy to defeat. They held Uzbekistan in the first round [last month]. But the Vietnamese players are in stable form. Our goal is to earn one point in the away match and if possible, we will try to earn 3 points."

Coach Phuc also said the Vietnamese team needs to improve. The defenders made mistakes leading to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Hanoi last month.

Explaining why he has not called in strong strikers such as Cong Vinh, Phuc said, "The players are working very well together and it is inadvisable to make any change at the moment."
