Hometown hero Tien Minh defeated in Japan Open quarters

Vietnam's badminton ace Nguyen Tien Minh lost straight sets to Hong Kong player Yun Hu in the men's singles quarterfinals of the Superseries Yonex Open Japan on Thursday.

The two players were on equal terms most of the first set until it was 22-22, when Yun Hu scored two points to take the set.

The 14th-ranked Minh tried harder and took the lead in the first part of the second set before the 21st-ranked Yun Hu made it 10-10 and then led 12-10, 15-12, 17-14 before winning the set 21-15.

Minh will return to Vietnam for the national badminton championship starting Monday September, 24 before flying to Taiwan for the Yonex Chinese Taipei Open from October 2-7.
