The Ho Chi Minh City Athletics Open 2010 took place on Saturday July 17, attracting 322 competitors from Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Twenty-two international competitors from the five countries participated in the 17th edition of the three-day event at Thong Nhat Stadium.
South Korea sent young athletes to the event while Thailand, after a year off, returned this time with five competitors, including the 2009 Southeast Asian Games men's hurdles gold medalist, Wallapa Punsoongneun.
Vietnamese sports officials saw this as a good chance for Vietnamese athletes to prepare for the Asian Games 2010, also known as the 16th ASIAD, in Guangzhou, China in November.
In May 2010, the HCMC Athletics Open was recognized by the Asian Athletics Association as one of Asia's official tournaments. Next year, the tournament is expected to welcome participants from 12 countries including China, Japan and Qatar.
