Truong Thanh Hang won the women’s 800-meter gold at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Teheran on Thursday.
Hang, the South East Asian champion in the women’s 800-meter and 1,500-meter track and field races, was faster than the other six competitors from Iraq, Kyrgykistan and Iran to finish first in 2 minutes and 12.75 seconds.
Borisova Tatiana from Kyrgykistan came in second place, followed by Iranian Mina Porseyfi.
This is Hang’s second gold medal on the Asian stage after her gold in the women’s 800m race at the Asian Athletics Championships in Jordan in 2007.
Hang was happy with the title but she said she was not in her best form at the moment.
“The result was not very good because I just got back to training recently after a time off following the 25th South East Asian Games in Laos last year,†Hang said.
“However, the absence of big rivals helped me win the title more easily.â€
Vietnam had two other competitors at the 2010 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, also known as the IV Asian Indoor Athletics event.
Vu Van Huyen didn’t do well and retired in the men’s heptathlon; but young jumper Duong Thi Viet Anh came in fourth in the women’s high jump after jumping at 1.83 meters.
Vietnam’s and Asia Indoor event’s sprint queen Vu Thi Huong didn’t participate in the contest
According to Duong Duc Thuy, manager of Vietnam’s track and field department, Huong could have taken the gold medal in the women’s 60 meters because Chinese runner Jiang Lan won the gold in 7.51 seconds while Huong won the gold at the event last year in 7.25 seconds.
