GM Liem is national men's chess champ

Grand Master Le Quang Liem of Ho Chi Minh City won the national men's chess championship after beating Nguyen Anh Dung of Hanoi in the finals on Saturday.

Apart from the title, 20-year-old Liem, who is the only Vietnamese chess player to enter the world top 50 with 2689 Elo points, received a cash prize of VND80 million (US$4,200).

On the road to the national championship, Liem, who won the Aeroflot Open tournament 2010 and finished third at the Moscow Open in February, had six wins and three draws to end up with 7.5 points.

In the women's finals, Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Hue and Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Can Tho fought to a draw after two sets.

In the tie-break decider, Bao Tram beat Thao Nguyen to win the women's title and a cash prize of VND60 million ($3,150).
