The first National Kickboxing Championships began October 2 at Buon Ma Thuot Town's Sports Center in the Central Highland province of Dak Lak on Sunday October 2.

A hundred sixty-eight martial artists from 18 localities nationwide have registered to fight in 19 categories (10 for men and 9 for women).

The fights are expected to be fierce between strong rivals from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, the Military team, Nghe An, Binh Dinh, An Giang, Tay Ninh, Binh Duong and hosts Dak Lak.

Vietnamese competitors have strong potential for growth in kickboxing, experts believe. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai won the gold medal in the women's under-51kg event at the first Asian Kickboxing Championships in Thailand in 2009.

Tuyet Mai and Dao Thi Thoan took two gold medals in the women's under-51kg and under-54kg categories respectively at the third Asian Indoor Games in 2009.
