Dong Thap have qualified for the 15th Under-21 National Football Tournament after finishing atop Group F with three wins including the 1-0 win over Kien Giang at Thong Nhat Stadium Wednesday.
In their opener on Saturday June 18, Dong Thap beat Can Tho before defeating hosts Navibank Saigon 2-0 two days later.
The qualifying round of the event sponsored by Thanh Nien newspaper will go on till July 5 and the top-placed teams from groups A to F, along with reigning champs Dong Nai and hosts Becamex Binh Duong will compete in the final round in mid September.
After the national event, the 5th U-21 International event, also sponsored by Thanh Nien, will take place in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai from September 17-27.
The best players of the national tournament will be selected to form a team to play against Vietnam's Under-19s as the defending champs, and other invited guests.
Thanh Nien newspaper and Vietnam Football Federation are planning to invite under-21 international teams from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and one to two teams from the Republic of Korea, the United Arab Emirates or Iran.
