Coach Trang Van Thanh of Dong Thap's U19 squad has been suspended 18 months and fined VND10 million for choking referee Ngo Duc Viet after the National U19 Football Championship finals.

After losing 0-1 to Quang Ninh in the final match at Nghe An Province's Vinh Stadium on Monday April 5, Thanh attacked and choked referee Viet because he thought the added time was too short and his team lost the chance of equalizing the score.

Thanh's behavior was described by the National U19 Football Championship Organizers as very severe and has a bad effect on the young player's ethics.

After watching the video recording, the penalty department of the Vietnam Football Federation believed that Thanh's behavior was very severe and badly violated the professional ethics.

The department made a decision on Friday (April 9) to suspend Thanh for 18 months from April 9, 2010 till October 8, 2011.

Referee Viet was not physically hurt but said the incident was a shock for him because it was unimaginable for him.

Four of the Mekong Delta squad Nguyen Tran Bao Trung, Nguyen Thanh Hien, Nguyen Tuan Vu and Nguyen Thanh Dinh was each fined VND2 million for shouting abuse at the referee.
