Vietnam's No.1 chess player Le Quang Liem has a chance to win the the Fujairah International Masters title in Dubai after beating Romanian player Lupulescu Constantin on Tuesday (November 20).
GM Liem did not have a good start but made great strides in the final games to be among the contenders for the title. After the 7th round win over the Romanian, elo 2622, the 2nd seeded Vietnamese, elo 2705, now has 5 points, the same as six other players, but Liem is in the second position.
In the eighth round, Liem will clash with Indian contestant Sandipan Chanda, elo 2596. Liem will have the disadvantage of playing black. The Indian competitor has also earned 5 points from the past seven games.
French talent Bacrot Etienne, elo 2702; Indian GM Ganguly Surya Shekhar, elo 2619; and three Ukrainian competitors Moiseenko Alexander, elo 2702; Fedorchuk Sergey A., elo 2652; and Sumets Andrey, elo 2622, all have 5 points now. Top-seeded Georgian Jobava Baadur, elo 2710, has 4.5 points.
Liem will have a big chance to snatch the title if he beats Chanda in the ninth-round game of the November 12-22 competition.
