Chess ace warms up for regional contest in Texas

Vietnam's top ranked chess player Le Quang Liem is on his way to Texas to participate in the SPICE Cup 2011 that will be held from October 15-25.

The competition offers an opportunity for the 25th-ranked Vietnamese player to prepare for the 26th South East Asian Games in Indonesia next month.

At the SPICE Cup, Liem, elo 2717, is the top seed in Group A along with other strong rivals including 38th-ranked Cuban Leinier Dominguez Perez, elo 2710; 77th-ranked French Sabastien Feller, elo 2668; 100th-ranked German Georg Meier, elo 2648; as well as the host players Yury Shulman, elo 2608; and Ray Robson, elo 2583.

Based on his current ranking, Liem is a leading contender for the championship.

After the contest in Texas, Liem will return to Vietnam to join the Vietnamese chess team as they prepare their goal of winning three gold medals at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia.
