Can Tho city will host the 18th Under-21 National Football Tournament and the 8th U21 International Football Tournament in September-October, the organizers of the tournaments said Tuesday.
City leaders Tuesday held a meeting with the organizers of the tournaments -- which are sponsored by Thanh Nien -- and the latter agreed to award the tournaments to the Mekong Delta city.
Nguyen Cong Khe, chairman of Thanh Nien Media Corporation and chief of the organizing committee, hailed Can Tho’s efforts in improving sports activities, providing good facilities (the main stadium with 40,000 seats, the 9th Military Zone stadium for practice, and several artificial grass pitches), and getting things ready for the two U21 events.
It is for the first time that the U21 National Football Tournament will be held in the Mekong Delta since An Giang hosted it in 2003.
The organizers urged Can Tho to quickly complete some unfinished work at the main stadium like installation of some seats and roofs.
They also asked Can Tho authorities to work closely with them to impress the teams coming for the international tournament from Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, and South Korea or Japan.
The qualifying round of the U21 National contest will be held from September 5 to 18 and the final round from September 25 to October 5. The other event will be played from October 11 to 21.
