Binh Duong drew 1-1 with China’s Jiangsu Suning in an AFC Champions League Group E match Tuesday despite playing with 10 men for more than 20 minutes against a team with Brazilian stars.
The visitors fielded three Brazilians right from kickoff -- Alex Teixeira, who was bought from Shakhtar Donetsk, Ramires Santos do Nascimento from Chelsea, and Jo Alves de Assis Silva from UAE’s Al Shabab.
The 2015 Chinese FA Cup champion, coached by Romanian great Dan Petrescu, spent more than US$92 million on the trio.
In the 13th minute Silva, a former Manchester City striker who played for Brazil in the 2014 World Cup, passed the ball for Ji Xiang to score.
Binh Duong pressed hard in an effort to level the scores, and won a penalty in the 28th minute when striker Nsi Amougou was brought down by defender Liu Wei.
Captain Anh Duc scored to draw level.
Binh Duong goalkeeper Tan Truong shone in the second half, blocking several shots, especially when Binh Duong played with 10 men after Nsi got a second yellow card for diving in the box.
Before the match, Binh Duong coach Nguyen Thanh Son had said, “We don’t set high targets in the Asian arena, but we will try our best in every match and hope for the best.”
In another Group E match, South Korea’s Jeonbuk FC defeated Japan’s Tokyo FC 2-1 to lead the group with three points.
In their next match, Binh Duong play the Japanese club at Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo on March 1.
