Vietnam's top chess Grandmaster Le Quang Liem earned an important victory over Tamir Nabaty of Israel in the seventh round of the 2012 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival Monday.

The win lifted the fifth-seeded Liem (ranked 29th worldwide) five spots to fourth place in the Masters category of the competition.

The third-seed, Englishman Michael Adams (ranked 14th worldwide), continued to show great form at the event, beating compatriot David Howell to lead the tournament with six points.

Liem, 20, is in the second tier of 10 players tied with 5.5 points each, followed by the third group of 17 players each with 5 points.

Hou Yifan, the 18 year-old female from China, seeded 25th, also continued her impressive run, defeating 6th seeded Judit Polgar, 33, of Hungary, to jump eight places to second and drop Polgar from 11th to 29th place.

GM Liem will clash with the Chinese player in the next round, crucial for both competitors, as there are only three rounds to go.

The tournament's top seed, Peter Svidler of Russia (ranked 13th overall), who has not played his best chess at the event, nevertheless earned a valuable win over female Bulgarian player Antoaneta Stefanova to earn five points and jump eight places to 14th.

The 10th edition of the annual Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival from January 24 till February 2 has attracted 256 players from 60 countries around the world.
