Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, 19, has bagged 16 gold and three silver medals at the National Swimming Championships in Da Nang to secure the top place for her Military team.
However, another swimmer, 14-year-old Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram of Ho Chi Minh City, has stolen some of Vien's limelight on the final day of the event on Monday.
Tram finished first in women’s 50m freestyle with 26s37, or 0s35 faster than Vien, who set a national record last December with 26s70.
Two days earlier, Tram also defeated Vien in women’s 50m butterfly.
However, Vien remained strong in other categories, winning three gold medals in 200m butterfly, 400m medley and 200m freestyle.

Her Military team secured the top place in the overall standings with 16 gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
Ho Chi Minh City ranked second with 15 gold, six silver and six bronze medals while host Da Nang ranked third with five golds, all claimed by Hoang Quy Phuoc.
After the national championships, Vien will return to the FINA World Cup series with three stages in Tokyo, Doha and Dubai.
Earlier, she had competed at the World Military Games in South Korea where she won a gold medal in women’s 200m medley on October 9.
A swimming coach who asked not to be named said that he and his colleagues assumed that Vien did not have time to recover after many competitions.
However, her coach Dang Anh Tuan said he was confident about his schedule for Vien.
“She competed in all categories at the national event… This is an achievement even if she was defeated by another swimmer.”
