Under-10 world champ Nguyen Anh Khoi continued his impressive run against older boys to take the U16 title at the 2013 ASEAN chess championship in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Thursday.

After Anh Khoi easily won the U12 rapid chess championship at the same tournament in Thailand, the Vietnamese coaching staff arranged for him to compete in U16 standard chess contest.

Khoi proved equal to the task, posting repeat victories to stay in the leading group.

Before the final game, Anh Khoi and the Indonesian player Azarya Jodi Setyaki had the same 6 points but the Vietnamese boy was in second place on lower tiebreak points.

He had the further disadvantage of playing with black pieces against Setyaki's compatriot Agus Kurniawan in the decisive game.

However, Khoi still beat Kurniawan while Setyaki drew with another Vietnamese boy Le Huu Thai, allowing the U10 champ to add the U16 title to his belt with 7 points from 9 games, leaving his main opponent adrift by 0.5 points.

In the standard chess event, Vietnamese boys also won the U20 and U18 contests; while the girls took the U20, U16, U14 and U8 titles.

Vietnamese players earned a total of 21 gold medals in the rapid, blitz and standard chess events to top the regional competition.
